Supporting professional development
The mission of the Panasonic Trust is to encourage and facilitate the professional development and technical updating of engineers in the UK, which it does by funding the study of appropriate MSc or equivalent courses.
The Trust is keen to support the study of new and emerging technologies, particularly those related to: environmental technology; energy; sustainable development; natural resources; materials; and the built environment.
The Panasonic Trust is generously supported by Panasonic UK  and administered by the Royal Academy of Engineering

 I graduated from the University of Strathclyde in November 2008 with an MSc in Process Technology and Management. The course, which is offered on a distance learning basis, is aimed at meeting both the development needs of technology graduates at an early stage in their industrial careers, in addition to those with more experience who are looking to update their technical knowledge and skills.

 I started the course at Manchester in September 2005. Run over three years, which could be extended to five, it comprised of eight core and optional modules chosen from a programme of 12. Examination periods were held over two to three days every six months to assess the respective modules completed. I chose to base my dissertation on the viability of photovoltaic systems and urban wind turbines on future NHS developments.

 I started the Masters programme at Newcastle University in October 2000, and chose this particular course as it was modular and could also be studied on a distance learning basis (the only one of its kind at the time). My intention was to study a Hydrogeology MSc as I had just joined the Groundwater Team at the Environment Agency. Only a few Hydrogeology MSc courses existed but they were remote from home and full-time.

 I achieved a distinction in Geotechnical Engineering in 2010 and also received the ‘Midland Geotechnical Society’ prize for ‘Best Overall Student’ and ‘Best Project’. I worked full time at URS/Scott Wilson while studying on a part time basis over four years.
