Simon Lamb – MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development, University of Cambridge
I began studying civil engineering at Plymouth
University in 1992 covering a broad range of engineering specific
disciplines. Upon graduating I continued in civil engineering gaining
experience in infrastructure and highway development in both private and
public sectors. As a Team Leader managing the delivery of complex highway
improvement projects I gained Chartered Engineer status in 2005.
I
envisaged my next career development move would be into middle management
via a traditional MBA route. However, I was disappointed at the narrow
content of an MBA and realized that I was seeking a broader prospective to
the current challenges in civil engineering. Cambridge University were
offering a Masters course in Engineering for Sustainable Development which
provided a broad range of modules that would compliment and build upon my
engineering design and management background. I was particularly interested
in the Management of Innovation and Technology component that incorporated
key management disciplines, similar to that of an MBA syllabus, but
orientated towards applying scientific and technical knowledge in a
commercial context.
My employer at the time could not see the benefit of
me increasing my academic knowledge and declined to support my career
aspirations. Having spent many years in industry I had real concerns as to
the financial viability of spending a year in academia as a full-time
student. Cambridge University Engineering Department was very helpful and
explained about the possibility of obtaining a bursary from the Panasonic
Trust.
